Green tea - A great stress buster
Stress is a common problem that each and every human faces in this modern era. Stress damages our health leading to problems, such as high blood pressure, sleeplessness and eventually leads to mental depression. Cell damage is one of the main reasons for stress. Oxidation is one of the important processes that lead to cell damage. There are a class of molecules called anti-oxidants that terminate the free radicals like superoxide anions, hydroxyl radicals, etc. produced in our body during oxidation process. Our human body itself contains different anti-oxidants which protect the cell. However, a cell dies when our body is not able to maintain a balance between pro-oxidants and anti-oxidants. This balance can be maintained with a regular diet that is rich in anti-oxidants. Phytochemicals are basically chemicals present in the plants or herbs which have various health benefits including the anti-oxidant efficiency. Green tea is one among the plant sources which is popular because of its catechin, a phenolic compound content. Among various catechin compounds of green tea, EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) attracts more importance. Research studies have found EGCG as a strong anti-oxidant and stress reducer. EGCG has also various health benefits like protection against neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, and helps by protecting against cancer. It is also useful in maintaining the body weight and aids weight loss by improving metabolism. We humans can maintain a healthy anti-oxidant level in our body through a properly regulated supply of dietary phyto anti-oxidants. 1 to 2 cups of green tea every day makes one feel fit, relaxed, healthy and most importantly stress-free.
