Benefits of ellagic acid and other important compounds of pomegranate
Pomegranate is one among the essential fruits of all time which provides important factors for our body. All parts of the pomegranate fruit are found to contain therapeutic values. The most important polyphenols present in the fruit are ellagic acid, punicic acid, estrogenic flavanols, flavonoids, flavons and anthocyanidine. The therapeutic constituents of the fruit can be used to treat different ailments, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, dental problems, bacterial activity, UV induced skin damage, Alzheimer's disease, etc. Many of the therapeutic properties of pomegranate against cancer are rendered by the compound ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is found to be a good scavenger of free radicals and decreases oxidation stress and lipid peroxidation. Ellagic acid is capable of interacting with cells and prevents the proliferation of metastatic cells by inhibiting the factors that promote cancerous nature. Various forms of pomegranate extract including fruit juice, seed extract, oil, etc. potently inhibit cancer cell invasiveness and proliferation, induce cell cycle disruption, apoptosis and eventually inhibit tumour growth. The seed oil inhibits cyclo-oxygenase enzymes which are important for the production of prostaglandins. The other benefits of pomegranate are that it decreases the cholesterol absorption and significantly reduces the LDL cholesterol level. The therapeutic nature of pomegranate makes it a potent anti-oxidant, anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory agent. Hence, including the fruit in our regular diet would help us in varied angles to promote our good health.
