Medicinal value of Prosopis juliflora
Plants are the special creatures in the world. They are the best food producers on earth. Generally, plants are the source of food, timber, ornaments and medicine. This short article is about the medicinal value of Prosopis juliflora. This plant is generally considered as an invasive species. But it has a lot of benefits and medicinal values due to the presence of essential secondary metabolites, such as tannins, steroids, saponins, phlobotannins, flavanoids, cardiac glycosides, betacyanin, anthraquinone and alkaloids. The medicinal properties are mainly because of their secondary metabolites. Juliflorine, which is one of the alkaloids possess antidermatophytic, anti-Alzheimer and acetylcholinestearase inhibitory properties. It also possesses some immune modulating activity. And another alkaloid called juliprosine has the antifungal activity as well as DNA binding activity. Isojuliprosine also has antifungal activity. Juliprosinene, which is an alkaloid, has antibacterial activity. Piperidine, another alkaloid has anticryptococcal activity. Alkaloids also have cytotoxicity property. Tannin, another secondary metabolite, is used in the petroleum industry with sodium hydroxide to reduce the viscosity and also for making ink. Their extracts are used for antiseptic, anticarcinogenic and digestive disorder treatment. Phenolic compounds present in the plant are used as analgesic as well as anti-oxidants. Apart from the medicinal importance, the plant also has some special features, including drought resistance, salinity resistance, heavy metal resistance, etc. They play a considerable role in increasing the soil organic matter. They also have pesticidal activity which helps in controlling tukra disease. Although the plant is generally considered invasive, it is predominantly used as fire wood. The article is trying to bring the essentiality of the plant to the society. A better knowledge on the common flora would help mankind a lot.
