Useful compounds from tomatoes in large quantities
Scientists at the John Innes Centre have found that tomatoes can produce industrial quantities of beneficial natural compounds. Introduction of protein AtMYB12 into tomatoes has the tendency to activate a broad set of genes that are involved in producing natural compounds. Scientists have found that by introducing AtMYB12 along with specific genes from plants (such as grapes and legumes) in tomatoes, compounds like resveratrol or genistein (beneficial compounds) could be produced in large quantities in more economical way than artificial synthesis or extraction from traditional plant sources (grapes and legumes). This research paves way for producing many valuable medicinal compounds in an economical and quicker manner.
