Pineapple genome study for the production of drought-tolerant varieties of essential crop
Recent research on pineapple genome has revealed that pineapple is the best comparison group for the study of cereal crop genomes. For the first time, scientists have found a link between regulatory elements of CAM photosynthesis genes and circadian clock regulation. In pineapple plants, the CAM photosynthesis keeps their stomata closed during the daytime, reducing water loss, and allows the plant to absorb and fix CO2 during the night and release the next day for photosynthesis. Hence, scientists believe that understanding the evolution of photosynthesis would help in developing more productive and drought-tolerant varieties of essential crops.
